Gates: end teacher pay increases based on seniority and on master’s degrees

Billgates

He suggests they end teacher pay increases based on seniority and on master’s degrees, which he says are unrelated to teachers’ ability to raise student achievement. He also urges an end to efforts to reduce class sizes. Instead, he suggests rewarding the most effective teachers with higher pay for taking on larger classes or teaching in needy schools.

Could this possibly happen in a place which (almost) everything based heavily on seniority and other titles ?
Here, teachers have to get master degrees, but often just to fulfill the requirement, nothing change much to raise students achievement.

Why the 8 Hour Workday Doesn’t Make Sense

Interesting article about 8 hour workday from The Skool Of Life,
visit the complete article and remember to read the comments there, very interesting.

The 8 hour workday is one of those things that seems be something in place largely because it’s just the way we have done things for so long. I know there are exceptions to the idea that the 8 hour workday doesn’t make any sense. There are certain industries and certain jobs that are required to operate in the structure of an 8 hour day in order to function. I recognize and respect that. But as we move from industrial age to an age of information, it’s time to realize that the system is kind of an efficiency clusterfucj3$. Let’s look at the flaws of an 8 hour work day.

Mark Zuckerberg, 26 year old Facebook CEO and 35th richest man in the United States today announced his new Startup: Education foundation, which focuses on rebuilding failing education systems one city at a time; treating them as if they were startup companies.

"School districts need more autonomy and clearer leadership so they can be managed more like startups than like government bureaucracies," Zuckerberg said today. "Many people are working on solving a single part of the problem broadly across the whole country. But recently, a few leaders are getting significant results by taking more of a startup approach and moving fast to do all these things at the same time in just one city. If they can prove that it's possible to turn around some of the most difficult urban districts in the country, then that will generate enough momentum to take the same approach and improve education everywhere."

A is for... Introduction to alphabet

I remember when I was a kid, my parent bought me a poster with list of alphabet, you know, contain all 26 letters and some other fillers. And the pictures used on that list were common objects that we saw every where around us, well, at that time.
Like: A is for Apple, and we had a picture of an apple. And so on.

I found an interesting picture in the net, and let's see whether the kids can spell them all:

A is still for Apple, but this time we have Apple Inc logo instead, T for Tags, W for Wikipedia, X for XP ..

Below are links to a good learning resource, well, the one we know since long time ago...

Spelling Bee at Denpasar

Some days ago my son was chosen to represent his elementary school to compete in "something related to English" as he was considered by his classmates quite good in English. He is good in English exam but I don't know whether he's good in speaking.

Back to the story, my son told me and my wife that he was about to compete in something English, as he was not sure what English he would compete in. And we had no idea at all about the competition, because in past time, usually, would be writing short articles with subject of current trend in English. We just helped him with "normal" materials like grammar, vocabularies, and the like.

And this evening he reported to us that he lost the battle.
From his story we knew, his battle was kind of Spelling Bee, in the simpler form.
Simpler, because from some Spelling Bee competitions that I watched, the contestant is not allowed to use pencil and paper, stand on stage in front of the juries and audiences usually contestants' relatives and friends and schoolmates.

While, as my son told us, on first and second round, the contestants would use pencil and paper to write down the words offered by juries.
Then told to read the word letter by letter, spelling the word by reading their paper.
My son lost the second round, got harder, compete with other school that seemed prepare well, and ready for the battle.

From what he watched, only in the final round that the contestants forbid to use paper, just like the Spelling Bee on TV. But of course with simple words, no word like Xyphophorus nor Schwarzenegger...

My son enjoyed the competition, he realized that English not just for a multiple choice exam, but spelling is important. Teach the students to focus, memorize, understand the meaning, and gut to say it out loud.

Maybe a good idea to do in Bahasa and English, and continually not just days before the competition begin...

Peran Ayah Dalam Pendidikan

  1. Provider, artinya sebagai penyedia dan pemberi fasilitas. Dalam konteks pendidikan, jelas bahwa ayah bekerja sekuat tenaga demi mencukupi kebutuhan pokok maupun penunjang prestasi anaknya, seperti buku, alat tulis, perlengkapan sekolah, bahkan les tambahan
