Some days ago my son was chosen to represent his elementary school to compete in "something related to English" as he was considered by his classmates quite good in English. He is good in English exam but I don't know whether he's good in speaking.
Back to the story, my son told me and my wife that he was about to compete in something English, as he was not sure what English he would compete in. And we had no idea at all about the competition, because in past time, usually, would be writing short articles with subject of current trend in English. We just helped him with "normal" materials like grammar, vocabularies, and the like.
And this evening he reported to us that he lost the battle.
From his story we knew, his battle was kind of Spelling Bee, in the simpler form.
Simpler, because from some Spelling Bee competitions that I watched, the contestant is not allowed to use pencil and paper, stand on stage in front of the juries and audiences usually contestants' relatives and friends and schoolmates.
While, as my son told us, on first and second round, the contestants would use pencil and paper to write down the words offered by juries.
Then told to read the word letter by letter, spelling the word by reading their paper.
My son lost the second round, got harder, compete with other school that seemed prepare well, and ready for the battle.
From what he watched, only in the final round that the contestants forbid to use paper, just like the Spelling Bee on TV. But of course with simple words, no word like Xyphophorus nor Schwarzenegger...
My son enjoyed the competition, he realized that English not just for a multiple choice exam, but spelling is important. Teach the students to focus, memorize, understand the meaning, and gut to say it out loud.
Maybe a good idea to do in Bahasa and English, and continually not just days before the competition begin...
